Philip Maddock - Fulfil life goals through coaching

The Coaching Academy Blog

Posted: July 2018

This week, our 'Clients' Success Story Series' continue with a quick Q&A session with our wonderful coach, Phil Maddock where he shares his story of how coaching empowered his client to realise their ultimate dream.

We hope you enjoy…

What was your profession before becoming a coach?

Prior to coaching, I was and still am teaching. I became a coach after experiencing coaching during a course I went on for middle leaders. I found it very helpful and effective. I used what I had learnt on that course as soon as I went back to work and haven't really looked back since.

Most people become a coach to change the lives of others… How has coaching benefited your own life?

Coaching has benefited my own life in many ways. I have made some personal life changes, such as journaling more regularly and it has given me some life skills such as communicating more effectively.

I have been surprised by various outcomes of how my coaching has worked. Mainly, the coaching journey has helped clients identify and brake down barriers that have prevented them from moving forward. I think that some people see coaching as common sense, which is true but I have realised that when it comes to one's own life choices, it can be hard to make decisions without a process to work with. I think coaching helps people to make these choices with more confidence, and to take calculated risks.

What is your coaching niche?

I have coached on many aspects, but my main coaching niches would be focused on career choices, life changes, and health coaching.

My first paying client was someone I worked with. We discussed it at large and she was already familiar with coaching. I have built up my client base, mainly through word of mouth. My website is a work in progress. I have advertised a little on social media.

Where are you now? How are you using your coaching skills?

Since completing the coaching course, I have already fulfilled one of my life goals - to write and publish a book. It is a fictional book for all ages, lightly based on the story of the three pigs. I have started another book, which is a follow up. This process has been very enjoyable and has even helped me to connect with friends from school. So, my future goal is to complete my second book and obtain an official publisher for both books.

Another goal is for me to start to put together my own coaching process - I would like to use my understanding of the coaching journey and develop it and promote coaching as a whole. With a better understanding of the effective coaching questions and requirements, I believe I would be a better coach, and writing my own book on coaching will assist with this.

What was your experience being trained by The Coaching Academy?

The personal performance course I did with TCA was really thorough and well organised, covering all aspects of coaching from starting off as a coach to the process of the coaching journey.

I think The Coaching Academy does a great job in preparing students as coaches. For someone thinking of enrolling, I would highly recommend TCA's Free Life Coaching Course - I did this with my partner and we both found it extremely inspiring and valuable.
