Jennifer Langrish - From Manager to Leader

The Coaching Academy Blog

Posted: September 2020

This week's Coach in the Spotlight is Jennifer Langrish, a corporate manager turned career & executive coach. She first started using her coaching skills developing her own leadership skills and now Jennifer coaches others to motivate and inspire confidence in their teams. Enjoy her inspiring story!

What brought you to coaching?

I wanted a career that helped others.

I had seriously considered and researched careers in teaching and therapy for this reason but found coaching much more suitable for me because it is forward focussed and goal orientated and I loved how it could be applied in my current role as a senior manager initially.

How did the qualification slot in with your busy life and what was the most rewarding part of this Coaching journey?

I trained as a coach with my work at the time and used the skills I learnt with my team of ten people as well as offered 1-2-1 coaching with managers across the office. This was during my training and after qualifying for my Life Coaching Diploma.

This was an excellent way to hone my skills and decide on my niche. After a couple of years, I decided to move to part-time with my work and set up my own business (so I could still earn and continue to develop in my existing role). I used this time to set myself up and in 2017 went full time as a coach, specialising in career and corporate/executive coaching.

The most rewarding part was winning my first paid client and seeing the impact the coaching had on their life.

Tell us about the work you do! How are you using your coaching skills?

I used my coaching skills daily while working as a senior manager and managing a team of ten.

The skills I learnt helped to motivate and inspire confidence in my team and they excelled as a result. I was also able to mentor my staff on how they could use coaching skills with their direct reports, which they also found beneficial. I created a coaching culture.

My company Calvert Coaching which I have been running full time since 2017, specialises in career and executive coaching.

My career coaching work helps people who want to refresh, refocus or completely restart their career. This includes setting career goals and clarifying values, coaching to prepare and create CVs, interview coaching and support through the entire process.

My executive coaching helps new business owners and includes coaching on business strategies, business plans and day to day business management.

What are your top tips for those currently in training with TCA?

Don’t try to rush finishing because there is a lot to learn and it’s important to apply the new skills as you learn them. It’s also important to complete the work regularly and consistently and not leave the studies too long otherwise it’s really hard to start up again!
