Surround Yourself With The Right People - Eliminate The Crabs!

The Coaching Academy Blog

Posted: January 2017

A top tip for success in 2017 is to surround yourself with the right people. You've probably heard this before but are you putting it into practise? In the same way that nutrients and diet affect your wellbeing, spending time with positive people can have a huge impact on your success and happiness.

Do you surround yourself with people who are filled with ambition to go after their goals, those who are already doing what you want to do so you can learn from them or do you find yourself surrounded by negative thinkers who zap the energy levels out of you as they complain about how difficult goal achievement is, those who are full of excuses?

One of the keys in assisting your own motivation is to surround yourself with like-minded people. You most certainly are who you hang out with and often when going after your goals, who you choose to spend most of our time with will directly impact your results. As much as your loved ones may have the best of intentions when it comes to supporting you in our goals, they can also be the biggest influencer when it comes to the decisions you make.

“Surround yourself with only people who are going to life you higher. Life is already filled with those who want to bring you down” – Oprah Winfrey

If you are on a mission to achieve your goals this year, below is one of Bev James’s favourite stories called ‘The Crab In The Bucket’ which could help you to stay motivated and feel confident with your choices.

One day a boy and his father were walking along the beach. The boy noticed a crab catcher carrying a bucket of crabs. The crab bucket did not have a top on it. The boy asked his father why the crabs were not able to escape.

His father said, "If there was only one crab in the bucket it would certainly escape. However, when there is more than one crab in the bucket, if one tries to crawl out, the other crabs grab hold and pull it back down so that it will share the same fate as the rest of them. ”

The boy's father continued to say, “This can also be true with people. If one person attempts to better themself, others often those close to him, can attempt to drag them back down. You see son, crabs in a bucket will never let another crab escape the bucket, the crab may try to climb to freedom but it can be pulled back in by the other crabs”.

As you go after your goals in 2017, remember to surround yourself with others who can keep you motivated and remind you of your strengths. You can do anything you put your mind to, all you have to do is believe in your abilities and bravely climb up out of the crab bucket avoiding the other crabs that are trying to pull you down.

A Coach can help you to stay motivated to reach your goals and act as a sounding board which can help you to overcome any challenges that you may face along the way. To find a Coach, simply click here.
