Coaching Success: The power of one conversation

This week is International Coaching Week and in this week's blog our Head of Training, Sharon Lawton, dives into the transformative impact a single conversation can have. She shares powerful insights on how one meaningful coaching conversation can spark self-discovery, provide clarity, and drive lasting transformation. giving answers, but by asking the right questions and creating space for true connection and growth.

Coaching Theory & Insights

Sometimes, all it takes is one conversation.

One moment where someone feels truly seen and heard. One powerful question that invites self-reflection. One pause that creates space for possibility where initially it felt an impossibility.

That’s the quiet power of coaching, and it continues to inspire me throughout my 17 years as a coach.

In a fast-paced world that celebrates speed, noise, and productivity, coaching invites us to slow down. To listen deeply. To connect to ourselves and to others with intention and curiosity, and while it might look like a simple conversation from the outside, those of us who coach know just how transformational that conversation can be.

Over the years, I’ve seen time and time again how one well held coaching conversation can be the catalyst for real change. It’s not always dramatic, but it is powerful because it enables the client to take ownership of their thoughts, feelings, and their next steps.

I still remember one of the very first times I experienced this as a coach. A client arrived at the session feeling overwhelmed, stuck in a cycle of indecision and self-doubt. There wasn’t a clear goal at the start, just a need to “figure things out.” But through coaching, through slowing down, getting curious, and asking the right questions, they left with a renewed sense of clarity, confidence, and direction.

I didn’t tell them what to do. I didn’t have the answers.  They did.

That’s what makes coaching different. As coaches, we’re not here to give advice. We’re here to create space.  Space that is safe, supportive, and judgement free for people to discover who they really are, not who they thought they were or who they have been told that they are.

The Myth of “Fixing” People

One of the most common misconceptions I hear about coaching is that it’s about “fixing” people or telling them how to reach success. But the truth is: people aren’t broken, and coaching isn’t about offering solutions. Coaching is about empowering individuals to explore and to find their own answers and in doing so, reconnect with their personal power.

There’s something deeply human and healing about being heard without interruption. About being asked “What do you want?” rather than being told what you should do. That moment of agency the shift from passive to proactive is where transformation begins.

The Ripple Effect of Coaching

What makes coaching so powerful is not just what happens during the session, but what happens afterwards. What I call the ripple effect.

When a leader gains insight into their communication style, their entire team benefits. When a parent becomes more self-aware and intentional, the whole family dynamic can shift. When someone struggling with imposter syndrome begins to believe in their worth, they start showing up in their career and their life in a completely different way.

That’s the magic of coaching. The growth we facilitate in one person often touches many more.

The other important part is the coach isn’t the expert in the client’s world. We don’t need to know their profession, their industry, or their personal story in detail. What we do need is the ability to create psychological safety, to hold space without judgment, and trust the coaching process to unfold.

One Question Can Change Everything

I’ve always believed in the power of a well-timed question. Coaching has taught me that sometimes it’s not about asking more but asking better questions. A single question can challenge assumptions, disrupt unhelpful patterns, and unlock a whole new perspective.

Questions like:

  • What’s really important to you here?
  • What’s holding you back from moving forward?
  • If you knew you couldn’t fail, what would you do?
  • What does success really look like for you?

They might seem simple. But in the right moment, with the right presence behind them, they can open doors that have felt closed for years.

We don’t always know which question will land. Sometimes a client will say, “No one’s ever asked me that before.” That’s when you know something is shifting.

Coaching as a Catalyst

At The Coaching Academy, I see hundreds of students experience this same realisation. They start their journey wanting to help others, but along the way, they find themselves growing too. They become more curious, more present, more intentional in how they show up in every area of life.

This is because coaching doesn’t just transform clients, it transforms coaches too.

Whether you're at the start of your coaching journey or have been doing this for years, the power of one conversation never fades. Each session is a fresh opportunity to witness change; to walk alongside someone as they step into clarity, and to be reminded of what’s possible when we feel truly supported and empowered.

If you’re reading this and wondering whether coaching can really make that much of a difference, I invite you to try it. Whether you’re a coach, a client, or simply curious, step into a coaching conversation, bring a goal, or bring your uncertainty. There’s no “perfect time” to start just the willingness to explore.

That’s the beautiful thing about coaching. It doesn’t start with answers. It starts with curiosity, presence and questions. It starts with one conversation, and that one conversation could just change everything.
