Daring to think differently through life coaching

The Coaching Academy Blog

Posted: March 2024

Next up in our brand new series, Where Are They Now? is Natalie Potts, Coach and Business Messaging Strategist, who runs her own coaching business, Natalie Potts Business Strategist.

We're catching up with Natalie since she qualified as a Life Coach and completed the Corporate Executive Diploma with us, as well as winning our Continuous Professional Development Coach Award in 2019.

As a Coach and Business Messaging Strategist, I am often asked what I would have done differently when I reflect on my qualifications, winning CPD (Continuous Professional Development) Coach of the Year at The Coaching Academy and taking the leap of faith from 19 years in the corporate world?

I would have trusted myself to know I had everything I need within to create my dream business and success on my terms. I’m now in a fortunate place to run a business I love where I help coaches, consultants and small business owners to challenge their definition of success and create businesses they love by connecting to their messaging and having a clear strategy to achieve their goals.

Like any journey, our business journey will never be a linear easy road

I’m committed and invested to be the guide and support to clients who are an ambitious and demanding more from their world and none of this success I have created would have been achievable without experiencing the power of coaching. It provides the space to be challenged, curious and held accountable to making things happen leaving little room for procrastination.

I live for those moments where clients share “it’s been life changing” because I am able to help them see their world differently and challenge the status quo. We are in an era where communication is key and coaching can help people navigate a complex landscape by being agile and adaptable. The most powerful sessions I hold are ones where I help clients to slow down, gain clarity and focus on their priorities. Far too many people feel a pressure to conform with society, meet others expectations which leads to a life which feels unfulfilled. This was the exact reason I decided to listen and trust myself that I wanted more for my life and that not taking the risk in trying would in the long term be a bigger risk.

The art of the possible

By working with clients to question what they want, be confident in their knowledge and skills and believe they can achieve great things, I am able to create a safe space where they feel valued, heard and listened to. A place where anything is possible. This with high support and high challenge means far less people put off starting their dream business and fall prey to a life of little meaning and regret.

I am evidence that when we want something enough, we have everything we need within to make it happen and achieve success on our terms to create a life we want.

3 Tips for Success on Your Own Terms

  1. Surround yourself with successful people doing what you want to do and make success non-negotiable. They will help you expand your thinking, hold you accountable and see opportunities not obstacles. It will be uncomfortable but that’s often when you’re doing things right. I quote Tony Robbins who said “The path of least resistance will never make you proud.”
  2. Know what you want and your values in life. Many people don’t really know what they want and don’t commit to creating the life they want. You must. Be different. Every decision I make in life and business requires me to know what I want. It also focusses me to live and breathe my values which are your moral compass in life.
  3. Give without expectation. This starts with you. You know you cannot pour from an empty cup. Prioritise yourself. Connect with yourself and your story. What is the life you want to create? What do you want to be known for? What message and gift do you have that this world needs to hear? Why are you not doing it? Can you tell I’m a questioner? Tap into your fears and hold yourself accountable.

As a coach and business messaging strategist, I would also note the importance in investing in yourself is non-negotiable. Invest in courses, programmes, having a clear strategy and educating yourself on your gaps in experience and knowledge. This focus has created opportunities in my business where I am now a Keynote Speaker sharing my journey and a mentor at The Coaching Academy where I am grateful to give back and help students on their coaching journeys.

Coaching will often be aligned to you if you want to live a life of service. If life is not fulfilling for you right now and you like the idea of creating success on your terms, coaching will absolutely open your eyes to thinking differently and a world of opportunities.
