Tuesday - Coaching Young People with Matthew Barnes-Smith

This module focuses on promoting young people's proactive mental, emotional wellbeing and physical health by helping them to break down barriers that prevent them from being able to be the person they truly wish to be.

The workshop presents a candid view of the actual practice of working with young people balanced with the pure form and theory of coaching. This follows a three-step process blended with dynamic and interactive group exercise and game activities to consolidate your learning:

1. Getting to know the young person by understanding their story, world, reality, needs and wants

2. Building trust with the young person through listening, sharing experience, giving them advice, safe guarding, protection and support

3. Essential tools and guidance for managing the young person's fears and stress.

You will leave the workshop confident of your ability to coach young people and will be equipped with a new set of tools and guidance techniques to add to your current coaching skills and knowledge that can make a difference to the lives of young people.

Wednesday - Youth in Transition - with Merete Langler

This module will help you to enable young people to discover skills and techniques they need when they are in times of transition and faced with making sometimes difficult but important decisions. Young people face many such times of change and often feel ill-equipped to deal with them. What questions should I be asking myself? How will I know if I've made the right decision? Completing this day will furnish you with the skills to help young people at times when they need it most.

This will provide you with the techniques and skills you need to coach young people through the transition they face and to be able to make great decisions with confidence such as:

  • What subjects should I choose for GCSEs, A levels or university?
  • Do I leave school or stay on?
  • Do I go to university or college?
  • What shall I do when I get there?
  • How will I cope living away from home?
  • Should I take a Gap Year?
  • What job shall I look for?
  • What do I want in my relationships?

This module focuses on core issues such as identifying strengths and values, overcoming obstacles, decision-making, setting realistic goals, and boosting confidence.

When young people discover what they want in life and are able to set realistic and achievable goals, they will be more determined and focused, and take personal responsibility for themselves and their actions. Their motivation and confidence will soar. This not only applies when interacting with their peers but also when thinking about their education, relationships and planning their future career.

When you have completed this module, you will have the understanding and ability to coach young people through some of their greatest challenges and to be able to provide them with the life-long skills and techniques that they can use to identify, face and overcome any obstacles and to reach any realistic goal they set.

Imagine the difference it would make to young people if they looked forward to the decisions they have to make because they are confident that they have the strategies and skills they need.
