Coaching skills are a powerful set of tools that anyone can use and apply to create instant and sustainable life and work changes. If you are a Coach or training to be a Coach then you are helping your clients realise their potential, move closer to their goals and desires and achieve real results. It’s a wonderful and hugely positive thing you are doing but are you doing it well?

Here are our top tips for coaching success:

  • Remember coaching is about results, there is no success or failure, there is only the result of an action. The results achieved must be and can be seen, experienced, measured and quantified.

  • Trust in the process. The GROW model really does work and there is a very good reason why it is G, R,O and then W. The GROW model allows coaches to structure a coaching session effectively in order to deliver a result that makes a more immediate impact.

G = represents your client's goals – what they want

The key to a successful coaching session is a well formed goal. By helping your clients to set positive, relevant and empowering goals you will be supporting them to take control of their future and improve the quality of their life.

R = represents your client's reality - what is happening to them right now and where they currently are

Unpacking a solid reality with a client can lead to some great insight and raised awareness about the situation.

O = represents your client's options - what could they do?

This is a great opportunity to support your clients in being creative. You encourage them to capture all the obvious options and then dig deep and explore some more.

W = represents your client's will or way forward - what actions will be taken to move forward?

It is vital that you firm everything up with your client. What / when / how will they be taking their actions forward? Get specifics and get commitment

  • Create and own your niche market in coaching. Think about what you have to offer in terms of your specialist skills or what you feel really inspired and passionate about. Who will benefit from what you have? What typical challenges will your clients struggle with? Identify your niche and the challenges your clients are likely to present and you will make marketing your coaching business much easier.

  • Model someone in your niche market who is successful. Be aware of what is it about them that makes them successful. Speak to them if possible and find out what their secret is. Is it their confidence, beliefs, determination, energy, risk-taking, fearlessness or their ability to seek support? If you haven’t already got yourself a coach, what are you waiting for?
