If you enjoy our Coach in the Spotlight articles then you are probably already aware of the great top tips that our coaches provide to those considering coaching, those going through the coach qualification journey and those coaches who are already qualified.

A common theme that runs throughout is the importance of running your coaching practice with a business owner mentality. You can remain true to your core coaching ideals of helping others to reach their potential but still “sell with integrity”.

It’s perfectly okay to think about how you will market your services before you qualify and to start to build your network. Here are some other top tips to ensure you allow yourself the best possible chance for success as a coach.

Top tips for achieving success as a coach:

  1. Focus on what really inspires you and what brings out your passion. The more you focus on what you feel inspired by and passionate about, the more of it you attract into your life.

  2. Have a niche market in coaching. Think about what you have to offer in terms of your specialist skill and who will benefit from what you have and what particular challenge they will be struggling with. Identify their problem. Once you’ve done that it will make marketing much easier as that becomes your niche.

  3. Keep to what you are good at. Don’t try to be everything to everybody because it will make your business look cluttered and messy. Be clear about your expertise and be able specifically let people know how you can provide a solution to their problem.

  4. Customer service is key because your clients are your business. It’s important to keep looking after your clients even after you’ve finished coaching them. Keep in touch with them via a newsletter, blog or social media. See if you can offer after-sales support and add value to your coaching.

  5. Never give up. If you are not doing something to build your business then maybe you haven’t got a good action plan. Use the Mountain of Gold: visualise yourself at the top of the mountain (having achieved your goals). Have a really strong picture of what it is you want. Be specific. Describe what you see, notice, hear, think… create a memory of that future. Have a date when it becomes a reality. It will give you a strong sense of direction.

  6. Look at who can be part of your Dream Team. You need other people to help you build your business and other coaches, friends or business networking groups can all help. Are you using the coaching academy e-community and linkedin group effectively? There are plenty of support groups that meet monthly. Do you need a Virtual Assistant to do the lower fee earning work, the administration, maybe some marketing? A Virtual assistant may allow you time to focus on the activities that will really enable you to bring in the opportunities.

  7. Model someone in your niche market who is successful. Having your own coach or mentor can help you navigate your path of success. They will use their experience, perspectives and contacts to help you get to where you want to go faster and with more focus. Be aware of what is it about your coach / mentor that makes them successful. Speak to them and ask them what their secret is. Is it their confidence, beliefs, determination, energy, risk-taking, fearlessness or their ability to see support?
