Self-image is how you think and feel about yourself. It can be constructed from the experiences you've had, the decisions you've made and your values and beliefs. While much of what making up your self-image begins with external influences, your internal filters also play a large part. As, along the way, you can pick up a trend of negative self-talk and this internal dialogue creates patterns deep in our subconscious. Challenging this negative self-image is difficult, however, techniques like visualisation can enable you to build a better self-image.

Lucy has been struggling with a poor self-image for the past six years. She felt unattractive and strongly believed that men didn’t find her sexy. She had a successful career as a management consultant but could not stop feeling bad about herself. Through our sessions, we discovered that Lucy had a younger sister. This younger sister was the pretty one, the one who got all the boys, according to Lucy.

Visualisation is the practice of affecting the outside world by changing your thoughts and using imagination to experience new behaviours and new events. By creating detailed schemas of what you want, over and over again and by using all senses to recreate these, new patterns for a change in behaviours are laid down in the brain as templates.
