We caught up with the lovely Katalin Marton, winner of NLP Practitioner of the Year Award at the 2019 International Coaching Awards to get a glimpse into the life of an award-winning coach. We hope you enjoy this inspiring interview!
We had an insightful Zoom chat with Katalin about the different ways she uses NLP, how she helps her clients and she even gave us some insightful tips on where to get started with change and leadership.
Katalin Marton is a qualified NLP Practitioner, Accredited in DISC profiling and professional member of ANLP who is using her NLP skills in-house, working in the area of Transformation and Planning within the CoSector University of London.
Katalin is passionate about using her skills as an NLP Practitioner to help her clients and her colleagues fulfil their goals, their dreams and their potential. She specializes in helping people align their goals with their values using the power of NLP – Neuro-Linguistic Programming.
“I work with a wide range of topics and NLP allows me to really tailor the process, coaching as well as NLP hand in hand, allows me to really tailor the process to the person in front of me. The typical topics that emerge tend to be around confidence, assertiveness, values and beliefs and aligning those, gaining clarity of those, how they run our lives, what is important to us.
And we inevitably end up talking about the sense of connexion and purpose. You know, the fulfilment versus success, the external perception of success versus people feeling fulfilled within. You know what gets you out of bed in the morning, you know, making sure that I am serving, I am feeling motivated- that's something that they often come to me with but they don't yet have that sense of clarity right from the start.
So they might engage with a certain topic like career management, time management or managing my leadership role with motherhood at the same time. Those kind of topics could be very real and it becomes very very holistic that is tailored to their needs one step at a time.
If you break it down small enough it becomes a lot less overwhelming and a lot more manageable for them. The idea is to create a sense of choice so that they can make more informed decisions about how to move forward. They are always ready for change and they just need the how-to, the tools, the structures, the way in which they can deliver that change.”
“My original background was in economics. I trained in business. And then I had always this calling to contribute, to serve, to help others, so I ended up working in education. And serving within operational areas or serving academic departments with our teaching and training. At one point I came across coaching through an incredibly talented, and experienced, and knowledgeable team I supported who were specialist coaches for teaching, learning and assessment. They were the quality team, which we were called, and I was part of the team supporting them.
And so I was around specialist coaches and I learned a lot from them. I also realised that I had used coaching skills regularly informally throughout my career as well as outside of my career. People coming from advice and then you sort of put in the position of asking pertinent questions that would help them move forward, that would open up the perspective.
And then at one point, my father gave me a set of books. Actually, the author of the book was trained by The Coaching Academy.
And then so I had the calling of how can I serve, I had the calling of how can I help others realise their potential because it felt like that's when I realised mine. And coaching as a thing has become something, you know, increasing and becoming more present and visible. Through the book I recognised - this is it.
I went for the two days. It took me some time after that, I really enjoyed it, the decision was made, it took me some time after that to actually deliver the training and get the experience building.
There was also a very serious medical chapter in between that kind of paused things and changed things for me. On reflection, it was a significant part in the way in which I have then ended up working with NLP. “
“In the transformation world you work with process, you work with people, of course, you work with systems, the architecture, the infrastructure behind everything, the technology - digital being a big part of that especially today. Analytics, how you measure your performance. And I do get involved with that to some extent still.
My focus now has shifted predominantly to the people side of change, which is the most complex side of change. But I do rely on various consulting tools in the people process and the systems world as well.
In connection, I also use DISC profiling quite regularly and I'm accredited through The Coaching Academy for that as well, which is an absolutely brilliant tool. A neutral place to start a very powerful conversation with teams and individuals both internally and externally with our clients.
More recently I started to do some mentoring, people were coming to me to share experience, and it was a bit of a combination of the different kind of supportive interventions between coaching, NLP and mentoring.
Depending on the client in front of me, I will be drawing on the right tool or approach, with the visibility of what that is so they are aware of what they are receiving.”
