This week, we caught up with TCA coach, Pauline Grant - a family Restorative Coach, currently in the process of setting up her coaching business, for a quick Q&A session in this week’s Coaching Weekly. We hope you enjoy...
What inspired you to enrol with The Coaching Academy?
I attended TCA’s Free 2-day training with a hope of developing my skills, so I could continue my work with young people and families. The first day enabled me to do a self-reflection, and it became evident to me that I needed to work on my personal development before I could further my work with young people and families.
What was your profession before becoming a coach?
Before becoming a Coach, I was a Mentor, Foster Carer and known to motivate/encourage family friends and my church community.
What did you find most interesting to learn?
I was amazed at the limiting beliefs that I had, and the values that had been embedded in me from my childhood, that kept me from progressing in life.
What was the most rewarding part of your journey?
The most rewarding part of my journey was being a part of the Stratford coaching community group, we met and still meet up once per month. This group is attended by qualified and coaches looking to qualify. Had it not been for the support from this group I would not have been able to qualify. When I became stuck and unable to complete my portfolio I swallowed my pride messaged the group leader who sent a message to the LinkedIn group. I was overwhelmed with the response of fellow coaches willing to support me to complete my journey.
How did you fit coach training into your busy life?
My journey required sacrifice of family time, so I could focus on my studies. On reflection, there were the days when fear was griping me, and I was allowing the negative chatter to get the better of me. I had to develop a habit of doing early morning walks to motivate and encourage myself.
Where are you now? How are you using your coaching skills?
I am in the process of setting up my Coaching business, Family Restorative Coaching. My fostering role is very important to me, I have therefore been allowing the young person to settle in my home, as we build rapport. I have also been taking time out to reflect and give my family some quality time, as I am a grandmother of 5 small children.
What is your coaching niche and why did you choose it?
My niche is "young people and families" and I am a family Restorative Coach. I chose this niche because of my years of doing youth work and the breakdown I saw in family relationship, also because of my personal experience of family breakdown. I could have benefited from having someone to explore areas in my life, so I could name what I was/had experienced.
I did not need someone to tell me what to do, I learnt from The Coaching Academy that I have all the answers!
Knowing that I have all the answers and there are no wrong or right answers enables me to encourage my clients that it’s all about their learning.
What are your top tips for people who are looking to become qualified as a professional coach?
For those who are looking to pursue the road of Coaching, I encourage not to journey alone. If you find you are becoming stuck, seek help from fellow coaches. TCA staff will always say once you have attended an Accelerator day, live webinar, or had session with client do the write up while the information in fresh in the mind. Please listen, as this will help to complete your portfolio.

I’d been stuck at a job that just wasn’t for me for 13 long years. It was in 2015 that I finally realised, just how much of a toll it was taking on me both, physically and mentally. I just had to leave.
