Corporate Coaching & What CEOs Really Want

The Coaching Academy Blog

Posted: September 2013

It is no surprise to us that companies continue to embrace coaching as a development tool. The ILM recently reported 80% of the 250 large organisations that they surveyed had or were using coaching with another 9% planning too. Very encouraging statistics!

We’ve spoken about the growth of corporate coaching before and it is always great to read about the success and progress of coaching from other people and fellow organisations.

It is no surprise to us that companies continue to embrace coaching as a development tool. The ILM recently reported 80% of the 250 large organisations that they surveyed had or were using coaching with another 9% planning too. Very encouraging statistics!

However according to the 2013 Executive Coaching Survey by Stanford University and The Miles Group, coaching isn’t currently being as widely used in the US as it appears to be here in the UK. Two-thirds of the 200 CEOs they surveyed reported having no “outside advice” on their leadership skills. They are however very receptive to making leadership style changes in response to coaching (57.1%).

So what exactly do CEOs really want from Coaching?

The research revealed very interesting findings with the top 5 areas of desired development being:

1.) Conflict Management Skills - 42.9%
2.) Listening Skills - 32.1%
3.) Delegation Skills - 35.7%
4.) Planning Skills – 25%
5.) Mentoring Skills / Developing Internal Talent – 21.4%

Soft skills such as motivation and interpersonal skills, also have an important place in the CEO toolkit as they will allow a CEO to build a structure where their management team can also motivate and inspire organisational members.

It is no secret that by working with a coach, CEOs can be more effective and powerful as leaders. Even Eric Schmidt, CEO of Google (one of the largest and most successful companies in the world!) has stated that the secret to his business success is having a coach.

Let’s hope the US statistics for Corporate Coaching match the UK statistics in the not too distant future. We’re sure that a lot of our coaches won’t be too disappointed if a continued growth in demand means a little trip to coach in New York / Los Angeles or Miami is on the cards!
