I came to coaching at a time of major change in my life. I worked in social housing for over 20 years... In March 2011, I suffered a stroke which left me without feeling on my entire left side and it took me three months to learn to walk unaided again.

As I progressed higher within the organisation for which I previously worked, I realised that I was more interested in people than in businesses and processes. I had not heard of coaching at this stage, but when a colleague mentioned it to me, I realised that I had been coaching people naturally all along.

After taking maternity leave from the police I went back to my old role in 2008 but was less than inspired so had some coaching to help me work out what I wanted to do. I was on a conference for women in policing when I first realised that it was possible to re-train to do something much more inspirational. An ex-police officer was working as a coach at the conference and that was when I knew coaching was for me!

I've had a successful career delivering projects in organisations where I've been fortunate to manage and lead teams and deliver training. Choosing a new career direction, I decided to deepen my knowledge of people. I'm proud to say that I've always used a coaching style - it just took the fabulous and free Coaching Academy weekend for me to know it was right for me to take coaching further as a vocation.

My coaching niche is health and well being. I chose it because as a result of my experience at the Coaching Academy’s Certificate in Coaching – 2 day event. I went on to set myself goals around my health and well being and as a result I lost 8 stone and became a personal trainer.

Absolutely not (I’m shouting that at high volume!). Americans have embraced and embedded coaching – in all of its forms, which they are to be credited for. Without a second thought or justification required, coaching is part of the US culture of personal development, going for gold, gutsy drive and determination made worthwhile by the results delivered.

I am a continuous learner which I regard as a good thing. I am highly reflective with a tendency for over-thinking – not such a good thing! I can be opinionated and openly share my opinions if I consider them relevant to a discussion! Although I can be highly energetic and pro active, my natural default setting is one of sluggishness and daydreaming. So why’s this relevant?

States affect our capabilities. There are no unresourceful people, just unresourceful states. How well you perform depends on which state you are in. Whatever task you have to perform, whatever you want as an outcome, ask yourself “what state do I want to be in to make this easy?”

The truth was that I realised I needed coaching as much as I wanted to be a coach, and with hindsight I think that is what my friend meant when she signposted me in this direction. I have always given 100% to my employer so I went into the qualification with gusto, thinking that it was time to do something for myself.

As far back as the year 2004, my work as a Marketing Manager at the multinational was overcoming me. I was completely overwhelmed even though everyday I was leaving the office late in the evening and working long hours. I never had the time to delegate, I spent the days running from meeting to meeting, and I could seldom be with my children. For my birthday, my wife gave me a very special present: coaching sessions.

My academic background is in Psychology and prior to becoming a coach I had always worked in support roles within caring organizations. I decided to do my personal performance coaching diploma in October 2010; at that time I was working two jobs and was also running my own dance fitness business in the evenings and weekends. Doing both was tiring- I knew something was going to have to give but I felt a constant conflict between two arenas which I loved: dance fitness and psychology & support work.
