I came to coaching at a time of major change in my life. I worked in social housing for over 20 years... In March 2011, I suffered a stroke which left me without feeling on my entire left side and it took me three months to learn to walk unaided again.

As I progressed higher within the organisation for which I previously worked, I realised that I was more interested in people than in businesses and processes. After taking maternity leave from the police I went back to my old role in 2008 but was less than inspired so had some coaching to help me work out what I wanted to do. I was on a conference for women in policing when I first realised that it was possible to re-train to do something much more inspirational. I've had a successful career delivering projects in organisations where I've been fortunate to manage and lead teams and deliver training. Choosing a new career direction, I decided to deepen my knowledge of people. I'm proud to say that I've always used a coaching style - it just took the fabulous and free Coaching Academy weekend for me to know it was right for me to take coaching further as a vocation.

Absolutely not (I’m shouting that at high volume!). Americans have embraced and embedded coaching – in all of its forms, which they are to be credited for. Without a second thought or justification required, coaching is part of the US culture of personal development, going for gold, gutsy drive and determination made worthwhile by the results delivered.

I am a continuous learner which I regard as a good thing. I am highly reflective with a tendency for over-thinking – not such a good thing! I can be opinionated and openly share my opinions if I consider them relevant to a discussion! Although I can be highly energetic and pro active, my natural default setting is one of sluggishness and daydreaming. So why’s this relevant?

The truth was that I realised I needed coaching as much as I wanted to be a coach, and with hindsight I think that is what my friend meant when she signposted me in this direction. I have always given 100% to my employer so I went into the qualification with gusto, thinking that it was time to do something for myself.
