As I progressed higher within the organisation for which I previously worked, I realised that I was more interested in people than in businesses and processes. I had not heard of coaching at this stage, but when a colleague mentioned it to me, I realised that I had been coaching people naturally all along.

Prior to coaching I worked in sales in the FMCG industry managing Tesco & Sainsburys. Throughout the positions I held, the bit that I loved the most was dealing with people; whether it was line management, customers or colleagues, it simply made me tick.

I am a continuous learner which I regard as a good thing. I am highly reflective with a tendency for over-thinking – not such a good thing! I can be opinionated and openly share my opinions if I consider them relevant to a discussion! Although I can be highly energetic and pro active, my natural default setting is one of sluggishness and daydreaming. So why’s this relevant?

I booked onto the free 2-day course at the end of February and went along to day 1 slightly uncertain of what I was going to encounter, but very definite in the knowledge that I wanted to learn as much as possible about myself and others. I’m pleased to say that I enjoyed it immensely and found it an inspiring 2 days, and knew I wanted to pursue coaching.

For once I followed my heart. Initially this meant relocating from South Africa to England to set up home with my soon to be husband. However the experience of building a very new and different life, at a time when most people are comfortably settled into a rhythm of life heading towards retirement, soon became a journey that changed more than my marital status. My South African career had been tough but rewarding.

I discovered executive and personal coaching as a profession quite by accident. I worked in an investment company in London - in the grey zone with no room for professional development, and felt ready to experience a change. Someone left a Protégé Programme Leaflet in a block of apartments where I lived.

The truth was that I realised I needed coaching as much as I wanted to be a coach, and with hindsight I think that is what my friend meant when she signposted me in this direction. I have always given 100% to my employer so I went into the qualification with gusto, thinking that it was time to do something for myself.

As far back as the year 2004, my work as a Marketing Manager at the multinational was overcoming me. I was completely overwhelmed even though everyday I was leaving the office late in the evening and working long hours. I never had the time to delegate, I spent the days running from meeting to meeting, and I could seldom be with my children. For my birthday, my wife gave me a very special present: coaching sessions.

My academic background is in Psychology and prior to becoming a coach I had always worked in support roles within caring organizations. I decided to do my personal performance coaching diploma in October 2010; at that time I was working two jobs and was also running my own dance fitness business in the evenings and weekends. Doing both was tiring- I knew something was going to have to give but I felt a constant conflict between two arenas which I loved: dance fitness and psychology & support work.
