Ask Bev James – How Do You Know If You’ve Found the Right Coaching Niche?

Welcome back to Ask Bev!

This series offers you quick hints and tips to help you set up and your coaching business.

I’ve previously covered how to discover your niche, but today’s post will help you ask yourself the right questions to know if you have chosen the right one for you.

Is Your Niche Your Passion?

Firstly, I believe it should be a topic that you’re really passionate about. Of course, the area of your chosen niche needs to be a topic that you will never tire of talking about or even more importantly for a coach, that you will never tire of listening to.

Do You Really Know Your Market Niche?

  • Test yourself by writing 10 top tips

Could you actually write top 10 tips for your target market? For example, if you’re a leadership coach, try writing 10 top tips for creating high performing teams.

If you can’t actually write these 10 top tips for your target market, then I would challenge you and ask – do you really know enough about your niche? Do you really know your target market group? You should be able to confidently talk about your niche with ease.

  • Understand the needs of your target market

Do you know the challenges being faced by your target market? Do you know what keeps them awake at night?

If you understand their problems and challenges then you really can help them move forward, you can help them with articles that you write as part of your blogs. It will also help you with your questioning and marketing skills.

Do You Have Personal Experience in Your Niche?

For example, do you have personal experience with this challenge: have you yourself overcome some of these challenges in this particular area? If so, you may already have credibility in this market.

Do You Have Credibility?

You may have credibility in the market if it is an area of serious interest for you or one that you have spent time studying in.

Do You Know Where to Find Your Niche?

Do you know where to find your target market? You need to be able to find your prospective clients in order to help them. You need to know where they hang out. This could be online or events that they attend, or specific magazines that they often read. By having a presence in these areas, you can raise your profile in your target market.

Do You Have the Right Price?

It is particularly important to consider how your fee matches your target market.

For example, if you plan to coach the long-term unemployed and you choose to charge £100 per hour then that may not be the right match. Whilst sometimes as coaches a niche may be a good fit commercially, you may choose to charge much less or even nothing at all.

But you do need to consider what the fee area is for your target market, because if you actually approach a target market and your fees are too low, they may actually doubt the quality of your coaching.

I really hope that this helps you to know whether you have found the right niche for you.
