Neuro-Linguistic-Programming (NLP) is defined by its co-founder, Richard Bandler as 'an attitude of curiosity that leaves behind a trail of techniques.' It began by studying and modelling the best communicators and outstanding individuals and has roots in behaviour psychology, general semantics, cognitive behavioural therapy, to highlight a few. As a discipline, NLP offers a collection of useful techniques, as well as an empowering way of thinking.
So how can NLP help you succeed?
Applying the art and science of NLP gives you greater control over your ability to be at your best more often. It allows you to increase your choices over how and what you and others think, feel and do, leading to better communication, better decisions and better outcomes. As NLP contains the most accessible, positive and useful aspects of modern psychology and offers a truly powerful way to create goals for yourself and achieve these goals with more ease.
By putting these 4 aspects into practice, you will be able to set and achieve your goals, accelerating your personal and professional success.
1. Know what you want
NLP encourages you to create empowering outcomes. It does this by suggesting that you know what you want to achieve as your overall outcome in your interactions, actions, thoughts and behaviours. This process is known as a Well-Formed Outcome, it is a powerful way to help you identify your goals and the wider benefits of achieving them. This process helps you realise that you choose your path and points out that when you are conscious in your decision making you have more options available to you. Simply put, you are in the driver’s seat of your life, so where are you steering the car? And, just as importantly, why?
2. Be aware and alert
In order to achieve success, it’s important to be aware and alert. As, developing a good sense of sensory acuity, also known as a heightened understanding of both your internal and external messages helps keep you on track. Checking in with yourself and notice what is happening around you will empower you to be more impactful in your interactions, focused when going after your goals and present in your daily life. NLP encourages you to notice what you notice and, in doing so, be aware and alert of the information that is being given to you. Pay attention to what is important to you and take note of the important signs along the way. This will ultimately contribute to your overall sense of well-being and success.
3. Be flexible
There are times when life, or other people, will throw you curveballs. And in these times, you can be ridged and resistant – or you can be flexible. NLP mirrors the importance of having sufficient flexibility to change your behaviour and goes a step further to point out can flexibility can help build and maintain rapport. Rapport skills enable you to create trust easily and put others at ease, allowing you to get on with anyone, at any time. For anyone striving to succeed the ability to be adaptable and to build rapport quickly and naturally is an essential skill.
4. Take action
Finally, you have to take action, as, without action, your desired outcome cannot be achieved. However, for many, the first step is the most difficult to take and in turn, taking action can leave them feeling stuck. If this is an issue you struggle with, NLP offers a useful solution: adopting a physiology of excellence. This technique posits that our thoughts affect our feelings and our feelings affect our physiology, which in turn affects our behaviour or the actions we take. As such, if you are able to adopt a physiology or body language that supports your desired outcome, it will be much easier for you to take action.
Many people believe that there is more and better waiting for them, but they may not know how to get it. Sometimes unconscious patterns of emotion thought and behaviour can get in the way of personal success and this is where NLP comes in. By applying these simple, yet effective techniques that are supported by NLP you will empower yourself to feel your best more often, know what you truly want and go after your goal to achieve personal and professional success.
