Motivators - NLP
Everyone has been in a situation where they have felt really motivated to get something done, where nothing and no-one could stand in their way. And it’s fair to say that we have all been in the opposite situation, where we have had a task or goal that we have wanted to achieve, but somehow simply not been able to find the internal resources to bring it about. So how have our mindsets differed on these occasions, what could we have done to change the second scenario, and how could NLP help? The secret is in the motivators we identify and how we use them as incentives for action.
NLP is all about accessing and using the resources we all have within us to make positive changes to our lives and the lives of others, but in order to be truly motivated to make these changes, we need to understand exactly what our motivators are.
In general motivators can be positive or negative, although in NLP, a negative motivator is not necessarily a bad thing! A motivator is an external force, stimulus or influence that inspires a person to act or respond. Positive motivators are aspects of the desired change that we want to move towards. For example, we may want to get fit to run a marathon and raise money for charity. A negative motivator is something we wish to move away from. For example, we may wish to get fit to avoid being breathless when running up stairs. In NLP, this negative motivator is just as powerful.
NLP also teaches us the difference between goals and dreams, how understanding this difference can have an enormous impact on our motivation. When we have a dream, we imagine ourselves already in the situation we dream of; we experience the positive feelings and emotions that are associated with the dream and therefore have no incentive to actually realise it. Goals, however, are changes that we actively work towards, therefore the pleasurable feelings and emotions that go with them are one that we will feel, once we have achieved our goal. It is easy now to see how motivation to achieve a goal is much stronger than a dream.
NLP equips individuals not only with the ability to identify their own motivators, but also those of others, and it is not difficult to see the practical benefits of such a skill. Understanding what motivates others is the basis of great leadership, and great leaders are successful in many arenas from sport to politics to business. Those who learn NLP to help others are able to motivate those they work with to make the changes to their lives that they desire; and of course motivating oneself to achieve such tremendous things is possibly the greatest reward of all. |
