You say coaching is all about skills and confidence - What does this mean?
The more skills, techniques and tools you have, the more options you will have when helping clients. The Coaching Academy has developed the most training days of any organisation – nearly 50 different days of training and the number is growing all the time. Few people attend all the days, however certain skills are key for different areas of coaching. For example, if you want to work in the lucrative world of Corporate and Executive Coaching (where top coaches earn fees of several thousands of pounds a day) then you need the advanced skills taught in our Corporate and Executive Coaching Programme.
Belief and confidence
The skills though, are only part of it. Equally important is your belief and confidence in the power of your questions. One of the many elements which makes The Coaching Academy stand out is our belief in the importance of ‘Coaching you First’. In order to be able to ‘walk your talk’, we feel it is vital that you are experiencing coaching for yourself. To this end, there are many different opportunities to find a Coach for yourself as part of your training – and we often find that ‘confidence’ is the first topic on the agenda.
Coaching is not giving advice or giving solutions. It is about helping your client find his or her own solution. Some students find this a challenge initially and that is why our courses are highly interactive, experiential and involve lots of practice and testing out techniques in safe, small and confidential groups of 2 or 3 people. Before long, everyone realises that the right questions are massively powerful and in fact, one of the best ways of helping other people. As the old phrase says, if you want people to think, to really think, ask them a question. And of course as they answer the questions for themselves, they discover deep insights and the conviction to take action and move forward.
That is one reason why coaching works. It also means that as coaches we can coach almost anyone. We do not need to understand the detail of the client’s particular situation – as long as we have the questioning skills and the confidence that skilful questioning really does work.
